Samaná is one of 32 provinces in the Dominican Republic and includes the entire peninsula of the same name. The peninsula of Samaná, with its total length of nearly 70 km and its width of between 8 and 18 km, is located on the northeast Atlantic coast of the Dominican Republic. The provincial capital, Santa Barbara de Samaná, is situated on the south-eastern side of the peninsula. It was formerly a small fishing village and was founded in 1756, by former inhabitants of the Canary Islands, at the behest of Governor Rubio y Peñaranda. At the beginning of the 19th century, freed slaves from the United States started to settle in Samaná. Nowadays, the provincial capital has about 82,000 inhabitants and its emblem is the beautiful bridge built across the sea to reach the small island Cayo La Vigia. Starting about 50 years ago, special attention has been paid to tourism in this region. Today, many hotels and leisure facilities are located around the beautiful beaches of Samaná. The bay of Samaná is very popular, especially for divers, because shipwrecks can be explored there. In addition the peninsula offers a lot of intact beaches, picturesque coves and impressive waterfalls. Furthermore, the fantastic vegetation is really worth seeing. With uprisings up to 600 m above sea level, the landscape is characterized by almost endless palm-tree forests and just as much tropical rainforests and tropical fruit plantations. The easiest way to reach Samaná is via the Samaná International Airport “El Catey” which was put into operation on November 1, 2006. This airport is served, with direct service from Germany, by the airlines LTU and Condor. „El Catey“ airport is located about 30 minutes by car from the city centre of Samaná. |
