The Dominican Republic is worth seeing not only for the fantastic landscape, but also for its breathtaking under-water-world.

Las Terrenas is one of the most important tourist locations on the peninsula of Samaná, located about 30 minutes from the town of Samaná.

This former fishing and farming village is rather isolated on the north side of the peninsula, as it is situated on the ridge of the steep mountain range of Samaná. The village can be reached by a 15 km long, mountain road, which connects Las Terrenas to the other parts of the peninsula.

Since the 1990s, Las Terrenas has become an international travel destination. The village Las Terrenas has optimally developed infrastructure. Besides a large number of hotels, restaurants, discotheques, diving schools and other sports facilities, the village hosts 4 banks with cash machines (ATMs), numerous supermarkets, pharmacies, one public hospital, as well as a few smaller private hospitals.

However, the small town Las Terrenas has preserved a part of its ancient quietness and dreaminess, because of its ample beaches and because the majority of its traffic routes still consist of unfortified roads and sandy paths.

In Las Terrenas, native Dominicans, resident foreigners and tourists live peacefully together. Some of the most beautiful beaches on the peninsula, fulfilling everyone’s dreams with its white sand and its natural palm tree vegetation, can be found in Las Terrenas. All of these factors lend Las Terrenas its unique charm.

The easiest way to reach Las Terrenas is via the Samaná International Airport “El Catey” which was put into operation on November 1, 2006. The village is also served by the smaller “El Portillo” airport for domestic flights. Domestic flights operate several times a day between the international airports of the island (Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana) and “El Portillo” airport.
